Vol. 496 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Róisín Shortall

Ceist:

378 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number and rank of gardaí assigned to Finglas Garda Station, Dublin 11; the number and rank of gardaí at this station in November 1997; if he has satisfied himself that the current staff levels are adequate; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22639/98]

The detailed deployment of Garda personnel to individual areas is a matter for the Garda authorities. For operational reasons, the Garda Commissioner is not in favour of releasing details of Garda strengths by rank, and I share that concern. I am, however, informed by the Garda authorities that the staffing strength of Finglas Garda Station, currently and for the previous year, is as follows:

Date

Strength (all ranks)

09/11/98

79

31/12/97

76

The Garda authorities have also advised that the resources of district, divisional and national specialised units of the Garda Síochána are available where necessary to augment local policing arrangements already in place in the Finglas area. The Garda authorities further inform me that they are satisfied that the current staffing strength attached to Finglas Garda station is adequate to meet the demands placed upon it. However, the situation will be kept under review, and when additional personnel next become available, the needs of Finglas sub-district will be fully considered in the overall context of the needs of other Garda sub-districts throughout the country.
