Vol. 496 No. 3

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Seán Haughey

Ceist:

416 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Education and Science the education available to deaf children; if he has an application for funding for the model school for the deaf project; if so, if he will sanction this; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22501/98]

There are four special schools catering for children with hearing impairment, two in Dublin, one in Cork and one in Limerick. There are 12 special classes in primary schools and three post-primary schools catering for such pupils. Children with hearing impairment also have access to the visiting teacher service.

My Department received a proposal in the last school year for the establishment of a model school for the deaf in Dublin. Officials of my Department have met with representatives of the proposed project. I have also recently received an application for the provision of funding for the proposed school. This application is currently being considered in my Department.
