Vol. 496 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Michael Bell

Ceist:

440 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Education and Science the plans, if any, he has to sanction the appointment of a full-time administrative principal for St. John's national school, Rathmullen, Drogheda, County Louth; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that his Department indicated that an appointment would be made when the school reached an enrolment of 237 which was achieved in September 1997 (details supplied); his views on whether this is a unique situation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22755/98]

To become an administrative principal, a school must have eight mainstream class teachers. Since the school referred to by the Deputy has only five mainstream class teachers, unfortunately, I cannot sanction an administrative principal for this school at this stage.

The enrolment of the school on 30 September 1997 was 177 pupils. I note the Deputy's reference to the school having achieved an enrolment of 269 pupils in September 1998. In the light of this substantial enrolment growth, I have asked an inspector from my Department to visit the school and to report on the exact position pertaining therein. Thereafter, the staffing allocation at the school will be reviewed.
