Vol. 496 No. 3

Written Answers. - Local Authority Charges.

Ben Briscoe

Ceist:

444 Mr. Briscoe asked the Minister for Education and Science if national and primary schools are liable to pay local authority service and other charges; if provision is made for hardship cases; if consideration will be given to the situation of Clareville Road national school, Harold's Cross, Dublin 6W; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22856/98]

My Department provides capitation grants towards the day-to-day running costs of primary schools. These grants are intended to contribute towards the general operating costs of national schools which would include heating, lighting, cleaning, insurance, painting, teaching aids and other miscellaneous charges.

Local authority service and other charges are imposed by the various local authorities and do not come within the remit of my Department. It would be a matter for the local authorities to decide whether schools are liable to pay such charges and whether any provision is made for hardship cases.

The overall financial position of Clareville Road national school, Harold's Cross, Dublin 6W, has been brought to my Department's attention and is currently under consideration within my Department.
