Vol. 496 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Dan Neville

Ceist:

449 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of primary schools in County Limerick which did not have the services of a remedial teacher at September for each of the years 1993 to 1998; and when a remedial teacher will be available to pupils in those primary schools. [22861/98]

There are currently 72 remedial teacher posts serving 125 primary schools in County Limerick. There are 25 schools in County Limerick without a remedial service. Five remedial posts were allocated in September 1998 to 18 schools in County Limerick.

The number of primary schools in County Limerick that did not have a remedial service for each of the years referred to by the Deputy is not readily available. I will have this information compiled and forwarded to the Deputy as soon as possible.

My capacity to allocate additional remedial teacher posts in any given year is dependant on resource availability and the level of competing demand from other special needs areas. The needs of the 25 schools which do not have the services of a remedial teacher will be considered when the next allocation is being made.
