Vol. 496 No. 3

Written Answers. - Nuclear Safety.

Michael Bell

Ceist:

64 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if she will meet with her United Kingdom Government counterparts with a view to insisting that BNFL release probability risk assessments to the RPII in relation to the high level storage plants at Sellafield; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [22659/98]

I refer the Deputy to my response to Question No. 100 on 30 September 1998 on this matter.

Discussions are continuing between the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland and British Nuclear Fuels Ltd. regarding the institute's request for access to documentation relating to the safety of the high level waste storage tanks at Sellafield.

As the Deputy is aware, I have already been in touch with the relevant UK Ministers in support of the institute's request. I will await the outcome of the ongoing discussions between the institute and BNFL before deciding on what course of action to take. The Deputy can be assured that I will do everything possible to ensure that the institute can carry out is appraisal of the risk in an effective manner.
