Vol. 496 No. 3

Written Answers. - North-South Digital Corridor.

John Bruton

Ceist:

65 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if he will report on the Government's plans to develop a North-South digital corridor. [21038/98]

Following my meeting with the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Mo Mow-lam, on the issue on 23 September 1998, arrangements for a follow-up meeting in relation to both the North-South digital corridor have been put in train and a date for an initial meeting of a working group will be agreed shortly with Northern Ireland officials.

I reached agreement with the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland on 23 September to adopt closer working ties in a bid to advance the establishment of a major telecommunications corridor linking North and South.

We also agreed that further meetings should take place to advance the establishment of a North-South digital corridor.

These meetings are in the course of being set up by the Anglo-Irish division of the Department of Foreign Affairs which is currently waiting for the Northern Ireland side to agree to date for a meeting.
