Vol. 496 No. 3

Written Answers. - Alternative Energy Projects.

Michael Creed

Ceist:

66 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the amount of Ireland's current energy requirement generated from alternative energy sources; and the proposals, if any, she will bring forward to further encourage alternative energy sources. [21865/98]

Approximetly 2 per cent of Ireland's total primary energy requirement, TPER, for 1997 was produced from renewable and alternative sources of energy. The percentage of electricity generated from these sources amounted to 5 per cent of total production in 1997. This is expected to increase to 7 per cent by the end of 1999.

Targets for the year 2000 and beyond will be detailed in the forthcoming Green Paper on Sustainable Energy.
