Vol. 496 No. 3

Written Answers. - Nuclear Waste.

Brendan Howlin

Ceist:

68 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if her attention has been drawn to the proposals by persons (details supplied) to dump nuclear waste in a disused mine in Trecwm, Pem-brokeshire, Wales; the way in which she has responded to this proposal; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [22645/98]

I am aware of reported statements made by the owners of the Trecwn site regarding the establishment of a nuclear waste dump on the site.

However, as I understand it, neither the relevant UK planning authority or the UK Environment Agency has received any planning application or proposals in this matter. Any proposals would have to go through the UK planning procedures as well as the Environment Agency's regulatory procedures. As I understand it also, any planning or other application in connection with the proposal is unlikely for a considerable time.

In the absence of any proposals, I am not in a position to make any specific comments other than to say that I would be concerned about the nature of the project.
