Vol. 496 No. 3

Written Answers. - Public Transport.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

136 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the extent, if any, to which competition might be introduced in the public transport sector with a view to meeting customer requirements; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [22878/98]

Substantial de facto competition already exists between public and private operators on inter-city bus services and has proven to be of real benefit to consumers. As outlined in my Department's statement of strategy it is planned to cary out a review of options for the effective regulation of the bus market which is currently governed by the Road Transport Act, 1932. This review will focus on improving customer service, effective enforcement, fair competition, and appropriate integration of services.
