Vol. 496 No. 3

Written Answers. - Electricity Generation.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

139 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Public Enterprise when electricity will be available to industry and the domestic market from the proposed peat burning power stations in the midlands; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [22882/98]

The new 120MW peat-burning power station to be constructed in the east midlands by Edenderry Power Limited is proceeding according to schedule and is expected to come on stream by mid-2001.

The relevant contracts between all the parties involved — the Minister for Public Enterprise, the developer, Bord na Móna and ESB — were signed on 1 April 1998.

Offaly County Council gave public notice on 23 July 1998 of its decision to grant planning permission. A single objection to planning permission was lodged subsequently and that is currently being processed by An Bord Pleanála.
The developer is ready to move on to the site as soon as An Bord Pleanála gives its decision.
