Vol. 496 No. 4

Written Answers. - Harbours and Piers.

Mary Coughlan

Ceist:

133 Ms Coughlan asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources when plans for Arranmore Island pier, County Donegal, will be finished by his Department in order that funding can be considered by the Department of Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands. [23009/98]

The pier at Leabgarrow, Arranmore Island, County Donegal is owned by Donegal County Council and primary responsibility for its maintenance and development rests with the local authority. My Department's engineering division, at the request of the Department of Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands, undertook an examination of wave conditions and tidal currents, and initial probing, at the pier. Based on these studies, an outline scheme was prepared for extending the breakwater, providing berthing dolphins and widening and extending the slipway.

I understand that Donegal County Council has now agreed with the Department of Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands on arrangements, including the preparation of detailed design proposals, for carrying the project forward.
