Ceist:254 Mr. Power asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the amount of illegal tobacco seized during the first nine months of 1998; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23029/98]

I have been informed by the Garda authorities that the information sought by the Deputy is not readily available, and would take longer to collate than the limited time available to reply to the question.
The Garda have assured me that these statistics are currently being researched and will be made available to me at the earliest possible date.
I will respond in writing to the Deputy immediately upon receipt of the relevant statistics from the Gardai.
