Vol. 496 No. 4

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a notice of motion under Standing Order 31 from Deputy Sargent. I call on the Deputy to state the matter of which he has given notice to me.

I wish to move the Adjournment of the Dáil in light of the meeting this morning between the Comptroller and Auditor General and the Committee of Public Accounts. The business of the House should be suspended to allow time for a debate on the failure of successive Governments to act on the recommendations of the 1992 Annual Report of the Office of the Comptroller and Auditor General. It states that obvious opportunities for fraud and tax evasion by way of DIRT arising from the State's slip-shod approach to regulating the granting of tax exempt status to certain bodies should be closed. In six years there has been no legislative movement on this issue. In the light of this morning's meeting the Government could help by making an announcement about what it will do about that.

Having considered the matter fully, I do not consider it to be one contemplated by Standing Order 31 and, therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.
