Michael D. Higgins

Ceist:

49 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for Defence the action, if any, he will take on foot of the UN report he recently received regarding abuses of duty free goods by Irish soldiers serving overseas; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22971/98]

Liz McManus

Ceist:

61 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Defence if he has received the UN report into an alleged duty free drinks scam involving Irish peacekeeping troops in Cyprus; if so, the main findings of the report; the action, if any, he will take arising from the report; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22848/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 49 and 61 together.

I have received a report from the United Nations regarding alleged abuses of duty free privileges by members of the Permanent Defence Force serving with the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus, UNFICYP. The report is an internal document of the United Nations and I am advised that it cannot be made public. The information supplied by the United Nations is being examined in my Department in consultation with the military authorities and any necessary action will be pursued in accordance with Irish law.
