Vol. 496 No. 4

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Review.

Paul Bradford

Ceist:

76 Mr. Bradford asked the Minister for Defence where the cavalry element of the new brigade, that will cover the area previously covered by the western command, will be based; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22955/98]

The recommendations in the Defence Forces Review Implementation Plan relating to the reorganisation of the army component of the Permanent Defence Force took effect from 1 November 1998. This means that the Army is now organised into three brigades, a Defence Forces training centre and two logistics bases as well as some other elements such as the equitation school.

The former Western Command is now the 4th Western Brigade. The cavalry element of the 4th Western Brigade, which is the 4th Cavalry Squadron, remains in Connolly Barracks, Longford.
