Vol. 497 No. 1

Written Answers. - Mobile Phones.

Denis Naughten

Ceist:

60 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Health and Children the plans, if any, he has to introduce legislation requiring mobile phone handset retailers to provide a health warning on handsets; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24217/98]

Policy in relation to mobile telephony rests with my colleague the Minister for Public Enterprise. Scientific research in this area is monitored on an ongoing basis by the Department of Public Enterprise with whom my Department liaises regarding the human health aspects. The balance of scientific evidence to date does not indicate any significant health risk from use of mobile phones. Should conclusive evidence emerge of an unacceptable public health risk then I would seek to have appropriate remedial measures put in place.
