Vol. 497 No. 3

Written Answers - Coastal Protection.

Beverley Flynn

Ceist:

160 Ms Cooper-Flynn asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands if funding will be provided as a matter of urgency to repair a road which has been damaged by coastal erosion in County Mayo. [24911/98]

As explained in my reply to Question No. 334 of 24 March 1998, my Department has at present no funds for coastal protection works on the mainland which are the responsibility of the local authority and the Department of the Marine and Natural Resources. My Department received an application under scéim na mbóithre aise — accommodation roads scheme — in respect of the road referred to by the Deputy. At my Department's request, Mayo County Council provided an estimate for the cost of the works required which amounted to £20,000. The application was then evaluated in the context of the 203 other applications received from applicants in the Mayo Gaeltacht and the limited amount of funding available to me under the scheme but, unfortunately it was not possible to provide funding for it.

The application in question will, however, be reconsidered under scéim na mbóithre in 1999.
