187 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Education and Science the number and percentage of students who availed of the opportunity to view and examine their own marked scripts after the 1998 leaving certificate examinations; the cost to the State of the exercise; the plans, if any, he has to repeat the exercise in 1999; the subjects on which scripts were made available in 1998; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Out of a total of some 64,000 candidates who sat the leaving certificate examination this year, it is estimated that 7,400 availed of the opportunity to view their marked scripts. The cost of this exercise was of the order of £280,000. In 1998 the scripts in the following subjects were available for viewing:

Physics and Chemistry

History

Technical Drawing

Economic History

Chemistry

Geography

Economics

Business Organisation

Latin

Accounting

Classical Studies

Biology

Applied Mathematics

Home Economics (General)

Greek

Home Economics (Social and Scientific)

It is intended to give candidates an opportunity to view their marked scripts following the 1999 leaving certificate examination.
