Vol. 497 No. 3

Written Answers - Inland Waterways.

Michael D. Higgins

Ceist:

42 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands when work will be completed on the Eglinton canal, Galway; the cost of this work; the date originally scheduled for the work; the year in which funding was originally made available; and the amount of this funding. [24856/98]

In mid-1997, an amount of £100,000 was allocated from the European Regional Development Fund waterways programme in respect of a scheme of improvement works at Parkavera Lock on the Eglinton Canal. It was hoped to have the scheme carried out in 1998 but this has not proved possible. At present, Dúchas, the heritage service of my Department, is awaiting sketch scheme and report from the Office of Public Works in respect of the proposed works and as soon as this is received and approved, the agreement of the Lough Corrib Navigation Trustees will be sought. I expect that it will be possible to have the scheme carried out in the first half of 1999.
