118 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Finance if he will consider the minting of special millennium coins for all citizens to mark the millennium with a view to providing one free for each citizen or providing these for a contribution to established charities (details supplied). [25110/98]
As the Deputy will be aware, preparations are currently being made for the introduction of euro coins and notes as from 1 January 2002. These preparations are placing heavy demands on the resources of the Central Bank which is responsible for the provision of notes and coins in the State. In the circumstances I do not propose to issue a special coin to mark the millennium.
