Vol. 497 No. 5

Written Answers - Special Criminal Court.

Nora Owen

Ceist:

295 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the reports, if any, he has regarding the Special Criminal Court; the number of cases the court handled from July 1997 to date; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25572/98]

Statistical reports concerning the Special Criminal Court are received on a quarterly basis in my Department. The following are the relevant figures for the period from 1 July 1997 to date, during which time the court sat on 150 days.

One, cases on hands on 1 July 1997, 18; two, cases received from 1 July 1997 to date, 34; three, cases disposed of from 1 July 1997 to date, 26; four, cases pending on 27 November 1998, 22.

Four of the cases listed at two above were subsequently amalgamated with other cases which are now pending and listed at four above.

As the Deputy will be aware, the Government reviews the continuing need for the Special Criminal Court on a regular basis.
