Vol. 497 No. 5

Written Answers - Tourism Taxes.

Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Ceist:

305 Mrs. B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if the proposal of a tax on tourists will be further proceeded with in view of the widespread objections by large sections of the tourist industry; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25404/98]

As I informed the House in reply to an earlier question on 21 October 1998, my Department is currently in consultation with the Irish Tourist Industry Confederation about the funding of tourism destination marketing post 1999 and related issues.

The introduction of a small visitor levy is just one of the possible options being considered and no final decisions have yet been taken on the issue.

As I have also previously stated in reply to questions, any proposals to introduce taxes, either central or local, would have to be considered in the widest context, including implications for tourism and use of any funds raised.
