Vol. 497 No. 5

Written Answers - Sports Funding.

John Bruton

Ceist:

306 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if he will allocate funding to Meath and Louth youth federations which will enable them to undertake a number of projects in personal development programmes for young people; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25577/98]

I understand that Meath and Louth youth federations have applied for funding from the allocation to voluntary organisations with a national or regional remit under the young people's facilities and services fund.

The purpose of this allocation is to assist voluntary organisations with a national or regional remit which have the capacity to deliver targeted education-prevention initiatives to the target group on a global basis with the aim of preventing the target group from becoming involved in drug misuse. Following an invitation by the assessment committee, chaired by my Department, a total of 55 applications were received and have undergone a detailed assessment by this committee against agreed criteria for funding. Recommendations have been recently made to the Cabinet Committee on Social Inclusion, chaired by the Taoiseach and an announcement on the specific allocations under this measure will be made shortly.
