Vol. 497 No. 5

Written Answers - Safety at Sports Grounds.

Michael Ferris

Ceist:

318 Mr. Ferris asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if his attention has been drawn to the danger posed by steel goal posts on playing pitches; and the plans, if any, he has to address this problem. [25703/98]

Responsibility for safety standards at sports facilities lies primarily with the organisers of events or activities and with the management of club premises used for sporting purposes. Although there are no statutory requirements specific or exclusive to sport equipment such as goal posts, I would expect all sporting bodies to share a concern for the safety of young people engaged in their sport and to review on a regular basis the standard and safety of equipment specified by them for the pursuit of their specific activity.
