Vol. 497 No. 7

Written Answers - Death Certificates.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

137 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Health and Children when a death certificate will issue for a person (details supplied) in County Mayo. [26196/98]

The administration of the registration system, is statutorily a matter for An tArd-Chláraitheoir (Registrar-General) of Births, Deaths and Mar riages and for registrars who operate under his general direction.

I have had inquiries made with An tArd Chláraitheoir and he has informed me that the death mentioned by the Deputy was referred to the coroner. In these circumstances the Registrar for Births, Deaths and Marriages must await the coroner's decision before registering the death. I also understand that the coroner has requested a postmortem examination, which has taken place and the result of the postmortem will be available to the coroner within about a week. It will then be a matter for the coroner to decide whether or not an inquest should be held in this particular instance. If the coroner determines that an inquest is necessary the Registrar must await the issue of a coroner's certificate before registering the death. If the coroner decides that an inquest is not required, she will so advise the Registrar, in which case the death may be registered on foot of a medical certificate of cause of death signed by a registered medical practitioner.
