Vol. 497 No. 7

Written Answers - Schools Refurbishment.

Paul Connaughton

Ceist:

182 Mr. Connaughton asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason a grant has not been paid to the Holy Rosary College, Mountbellew, Ballinasloe, County Galway, towards the cost of a new boiler and yard development; and the reason a grant for a science laboratory which was approved in 1994 has not been paid. [26191/98]

Applications for grant assistance were received from the Holy Rosary College, Mountbellew, Ballinasloe, County Galway, for works to a boiler and yard development at the school. One of the conditions of the scheme for the payment of grants towards the building of secondary schools is that the school authority must obtain the written decision of my Department to proceed with the works before any commitments are entered into.

The situation in relation to Holy Rosary College is that the works were already in progress when the applications were submitted. In the circumstances it has not been possible for my Department to provide grant assistance for these works. However, the school authority has been informed by the planning and building unit that the situation will be reviewed and this review is currently being carried out.

In relation to the application for an additional science laboratory, my Department is awaiting documentation from the school authority in order to progress the project.
