Vol. 497 No. 7

Written Answers - School Staffing.

Seán Ryan

Ceist:

190 Mr. S. Ryan asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has reassessed the need for an additional teacher at Pope John Paul II national school, Malahide, County Dublin, in view of the inspector's report and in view of the fact that there are three third year classes with an average of 39 pupils which is unacceptable to parents, pupils and teachers; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26264/98]

The authorised staffing at John Paul II national school in Malahide in the current year is a principal and 18 teachers. This staffing is based on the school's enrolment of 553 pupils in September 1997. The school also has a remedial teacher.

The inspector's report to which the Deputy refers does not appear to have been received within my Department. However, the inspector has been requested to submit a report on the current situation in the school. As soon as this has been received and assessed, the staffing allocation at the school will be reviewed and my officials will correspond with the board of management directly in this matter.
