Vol. 497 No. 7

Written Answers - Employment Action Plan.

Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Ceist:

11 Mrs. B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the provisions her Department has made to accommodate the implementation of the employment action plan; the provisions under way to extend the employment action plan to the over 25s; the breakdown in the type of employment and training which people are participating in under the action plan; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [24823/98]

The employment action plan — EAP — commenced on 1 September last in respect of young people aged under 25. The statistics available for the initial period of operation show that the impact of the measures has been extremely positive.

A total of 7,500 FAS places are reserved for young persons referred for available supports. In September, the first month of implementation, 41 per cent of those for whom interviews were scheduled before the end of October actually signed off the live register. Of the persons interviewed by FAS, 42 per cent were placed in a job or placed in or referred to a training programme.

I intend to extend the preventative strategy to adult unemployed next year following the early experience gained from the operation of the process for young unemployed.
