Vol. 497 No. 7

Written Answers - Retail Sector.

John Perry

Ceist:

15 Mr. Perry asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if her attention has been drawn to the fact that Tesco has set about changing its in-store demonstrations to a centrally co-ordinated demonstration system; if her attention has further been drawn to the fact that no Irish company could handle all of the business due to the fact that there are ten demonstrations per week in each of its 70 stores; if her attention has further been drawn to the dangers of this new proposal for the sale and marketing of Irish products; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [26098/98]

Decisions in relation to in-store demonstrations within Tesco Ireland's stores are a matter for the company itself and it is not appropriate for me to comment on the matter.

I assure the Deputy that the commitments given by Tesco to my predecessor in relation to the purchase of Irish products are being honoured. Tesco Ireland continues to meet with Enterprise Ireland and Bord Bia to ensure that the Irish supply base is given every opportunity to achieve its potential.
