Vol. 497 No. 7

Written Answers - Allied Irish Banks Investigations.

Róisín Shortall

Ceist:

35 Ms Shortall asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the action, if any, her Department has taken concerning further allegations of the promotion of bogus foreign addresses for bogus offshore accounts by or on behalf of Allied Irish Banks plc; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [26110/98]

The Deputy will be aware that statutory responsibility for supervision of the banking sector is held by the Central Bank of Ireland. The allegations of tax evasion in this case are also of obvious interest to the Revenue Commissioners. As recently agreed by the Government, the Minister for Finance will be bringing forward draft legislation in the near future to have these allegations thoroughly investigated by the Committee of Public Accounts and the Comptroller and Auditor General. Accordingly, no initiative is necessary on my part at this time.
