Vol. 498 No. 1

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

291 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs the reason a person (details supplied) in County Dublin is not being paid social welfare benefit. [26320/98]

Ceist:

299 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs the reason it could take up to three weeks for a social welfare official to call a person (details supplied) in County Mayo to verify his residency in order that his unemployment assistance will be processed. [26670/98]

It is proposed to take Questions Nos. 291 and 299 together.

The person concerned applied for unemployment assistance on 6 October 1998 and was referred to the office covering his area. He was also given a checklist of requirements that would be needed to process his application, including proof of residence. He failed, despite a number of requests, to supply this evidence. Following a call by a local inspector his claim has now been allowed and payment has been made with effect from 6 October 1998. Continuing entitlement will depend on him continuing to fulfil the conditions of being unemployed, available for and genuinely seeking work and he will be required to provide the necessary evidence to the local office in this regard.

Ceist:

292 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs when a person (details supplied) in County Mayo who has applied for social welfare assistance for three days of each week will receive her entitlement. [26432/98]

The person concerned applied for unemployment assistance on 5 November 1998. Before a decision can be given in her case, an investigation of her circumstances must be carried out. An inspector has been making efforts to contact the person concerned in this regard.

When the investigation has been completed, the case will be referred to a deciding officer for a decision and the person concerned will be notified of the outcome.
