Vol. 498 No. 1

Written Answers. - Marine Accidents.

Proinsias De Rossa

Ceist:

67 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the investigation, if any, which has been held into the destruction on the sea bed off the Donegal coast of the vessel, Lisa Selena, which sank with the loss of two lives; the implications of the destruction for any investigation into the cause of the sinking; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26469/98]

My Department, in conjunction with the Garda and the Attorney General's office, has launched a full investigation into the incident, whereby damage has apparently been caused to the vessel Lisa Selena, following its loss in tragic circumstances.

In addition, a marine casualty investigation, under section 728 of the Merchant Shippping Act, 1894, is being undertaken by my Department's marine survey office into the sinking of the vessel with the tragic loss of two lives. I cannot say, at this stage, what the full implications will be for that investigation arising out of the damage done to the sunken vessel. However, the investigation will fully address this aspect of the tragedy.
