Vol. 498 No. 1

Written Answers. - Sunday Trading.

Seán Haughey

Ceist:

80 Mr. Haughey asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the position in relation to Sunday trading; the recent developments, if any, in this regard; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [26443/98]

The Shops (Hours of Trading) Act, 1938, governs the opening of retail establishments. The Act provides for a ban on Sunday trading for most shops but gave the Minister power by order to add to the list of exempted business, or to exempt specifed regions from the provisions of the Act. However, an order made later that year (1938) exempted the whole country from the provisions of the Act and effectively removed all restrictions on Sunday trading. This remains the position to the present day.

I draw the Deputy's attention to the replies to Questions Nos. 69 and 70 on 1 December 1998 on related matters.
