Vol. 498 No. 1

Written Answers. - Airport Charges.

Liam Lawlor

Ceist:

128 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Public Enterprise her views on the alleged loss of business at Dublin Airport consequent upon the implementation of a proposed increase in landing fees by Aer Rianta (details supplied); if she is in consultation with the company on the matter; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [26752/98]

No proposal to increase airport charges has been received in my Department. However, I am aware that Aer Rianta has decided not to introduce a new cycle of discount schemes related to airport charges at Dublin Airport in January next. This represents a prudent interim position for Aer Rianta, pending further decisions on airport charges by me in due course. In any case, benefits of the 1997 and 1998 discount schemes will continue to accrue to airlines until 2003 and 2004 respectively.

Aer Rianta has commissioned consultants to report to the board shortly with a view to formulating comprehensive proposals on airport charges to be submitted to me for my approval. In considering these proposals, I will take all relevant factors into account, including the impact any change in the level of charges would have on airlines and, consequently, on the travelling public. I have discussed the airport charges situation with the chairman of Aer Rianta in the context of my regular meetings with him and I intend to continue to consult with both Aer Rianta and the airlines on this issue in the months ahead.
