Vol. 498 No. 2

Written Answers. - Hearing Impairment Claims.

Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Ceist:

124 Mrs. B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Defence if it is his Department's policy to require an acoustic expert to give evidence in relation to hearing compensation cases in court; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26831/98]

It is not generally the practice for the State to call an acoustics expert to give evidence in hearing compensation cases as it normally concedes that unprotected exposure to gunfire noise may cause high tone hearing loss.

Expert evidence on behalf of the State is usually provided by the ear, nose and throat specialist who examined the plaintiff or by appropriate military specialists, such as Army medical officers.
