Vol. 498 No. 3

Written Answers - Garda Recruitment.

Brendan Smith

Ceist:

157 Mr. B. Smith asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the reason a person (details supplied) in County Cavan has not yet been recruited to the Garda Síochána as a trainee in view of the fact that he had been notified earlier that his application had been accepted; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27167/98]

The Garda Síochána (Admissions and Appointments) Regulations, 1988, as amended, prescribe the criteria for admission of trainees to the Garda Síochána.

The person concerned was successful in the 1994 Garda recruitment competition conducted by the Civil Service Commission. However, not-withstanding success in the commission selection process, the admission of persons as trainees to the Garda college is a matter for the Garda Commissioner. The aforementioned regulations provide that the Garda Commissioner shall not admit a person as a trainee if he considers that the person is generally unsuitable.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the person concerned was found to be generally unsuitable. He was notified by the Garda authorities on 4 December 1996 that his application was unsuccessful.
