Vol. 498 No. 3

Written Answers - Case Against BNFL.

Róisín Shortall

Ceist:

9 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the position in relation to funding of legal and research costs in connection with the STAD case; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [27040/98]

I refer the Deputy to my response to Parliamentary Question No. 81 on 10 November 1998.

The County Louth residents have accepted the terms of the Government's offer of assistance towards the cost of research activities being undertaken by them in their legal proceedings against BNFL, and £76,000 has been paid to date. Further payments will be made on foot of the Government's offer of assistance as soon as further claims are received from the residents and subject to the terms of the offer being complied with.

As I mentioned in my reply to Parliamentary Question No. 81 on 10 November 1998, the Government, in December 1997, approved a further package of assistance relating to defined areas of work by the residents' legal team arising from these research activities. Details of this offer were outlined in my letter to the residents' solicitor dated 12 December 1997. The residents have yet to confirm that they are in a position to accept this offer.
