Vol. 498 No. 3

Written Answers - Northern Ireland Issues.

Gay Mitchell

Ceist:

70 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the measures, if any, his Department has undertaken to find a resolution to the Drumcree protest since the end of the marching season; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27082/98]

The protest at Drumcree regrettably continues despite the efforts of a number of parties to resolve the dispute. The recent disturbances there are a reminder that acting at all times within the law is an essential part of the confidence building required to achieve a resolution. The perpetuation of conflict over this issue is not only contrary to the real interests of all the people of Northern Ireland but also makes it difficult to establish the necessary dialogue and agreement.

Mutual respect and local accommodation remain the only way of resolving this conflict. Officials from my Department continue to monitor the situation and are in ongoing contact with parties involved in order to encourage dialogue and a way forward. However, no one party can of itself deliver a resolution. It will take the determination of all parties. particularly those most directly involved, to find a fair and peaceful resolution. I and the Government continue to do all that we can to encourage and assist the search for an agreed way forward.
