Vol. 499 No. 1

Written Answers. - Local Authority Housing.

Ceist:

665 Mr. Hayes asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the amount of funding provided by his Department to each local authority during 1998 for the construction of new housing starts; the authorities which were unable to spend their total allocation; the amount involved in each case; the number of new houses lost to the public housing programme as a consequence of this failure on the part of the local authorities concerned; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1199/99]

The local authority housing programme is funded from a combination of Exchequer funding and local authority capital receipts for which the total provision in the 1998 public capital programme was £194.420 million. The Exchequer portion of the allocation was expended in full. Outturn figures for expenditure by each local authority on their 1998 housing programme, based on year end returns by authorities, are being compiled in the Department at present. Local authorities are also making returns on the actual number of new house "starts"/acquisitions in 1998. A detailed reply will be forwarded to the Deputy as soon as all of the necessary statistical information has been received in the Department and finalised.
