Vol. 499 No. 1

Written Answers. - Genetically Modified Organisms.

John Gormley

Ceist:

699 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the plans, if any, he has to introduce a moratorium on the production of genetically modified organisms; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1579/99]

I refer to the reply to Questions Nos. 33, 274, 275 and 276 of 25 November 1997.

The national consultation process on GMOs and the Environment which I initiated on 24 August 1998 is ongoing. All organisations and individuals who responded in writing to the consultation paper have been invited to participate in a debate. Arrangements for this debate are currently being made by my Department. Thereafter, I will complete the review of national policy in this area.
