Vol. 499 No. 1

Written Answers. - EU Directives.

Frances Fitzgerald

Ceist:

782 Ms Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the resources and personnel available to transpose EU directives into Irish law; if he has satisfied himself with the rate of progress of this implementation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1621/99]

Personnel in my Department are assigned as the need arises to work on the transposition of EU directives into Irish law. The work is advanced as quickly as possible in consultation with the Attorney General's Office and the Parliamentary Draftsman's Office consistent with the need to meet the various deadlines for implementation which are set out in each directive. Where primary legislation is concerned, the passage of the legisation is of course determined, among other matters, by the ordering of business generally in both Houses. The Deputy will appreciate that some directives are, inevitably, implemeted more quickly than others and much depends on the manner of implementation, the subject matter and the complexity involved.

I am satisfied that sufficient resources and personnel, within my Department's overall personnel complement, are made available to meet these obligations.
