Vol. 499 No. 1

Written Answers. - Public Order.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

828 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform his views on the public poster display by anti-abortionists on the pedestrian island in O'Connell Street, Dublin 1. [1603/99]

I am informed by the Garda authorities, and the Deputy will no doubt be aware, that over the past five years, a small group of demonstrators have displayed posters and handed out leaflets on the median strip, opposite the GPO, in O'Connell Street.

I am further informed that following a number of complaints from members of the public, investigation files were prepared and forwarded on two separate occasions by the Garda to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

I understand that on both occasions the DPP directed that there should be no prosecutions. As the Deputy will be aware, the director is independent in the exercise of his functions and it would be inappropriate for me to make any further comment on the matter.
