Vol. 499 No. 1

Written Answers. - Sports Capital Programme.

John Bruton

Ceist:

844 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if he will make a decision regarding an application lodged by Claremount Stadium, Navan, County Meath, for the transfer of a £300,000 grant which was provisionally allocated for an indoor running track to be used to develop an outdoor running track; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28351/98]

A grant of £300,000 was allocated in 1994 under the sports capital programme towards the development of an indoor track at the stadium in question.

In April 1997 the executive committee of the stadium submitted a proposal for the reallocation of the grant already approved to the development of an outdoor track and upgrading an existing building.

At meetings with representatives of both national athletic bodies in recent times, I have outlined my policy that all of the athletic organisations should work together more closely for the ultimate benefit of the sport of athletics.

The application from the executive committee of Claremount Stadium is being considered, having regard to progress which is being made towards the ultimate goal of a unified athletics body.
