Vol. 499 No. 1

Written Answers. - Youth Services.

John McGuinness

Ceist:

932 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Education and Science if his Department will consider an urgent request for funding for Ossory youth, New Street, Kilkenny, which has made an application for funding for youth provision in Newpark Close and Hebron Park, Kilkenny; and if his Department will include both of these areas within its existing disadvantaged project funding, the Kilkenny city youth project, and increase the 1999 funding to a level that will cater for the inclusion of both areas. [1324/99]

Phil Hogan

Ceist:

983 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the financial difficulties of the Ossory Youth Services in supporting the continuation of an essential youth worker in the Newpark and Hebron Park area of Kilkenny city; if he will review this situation with a view to granting additional resources as soon as possible to allow the youth worker to continue in this post; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1626/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 932 and 983 together.

The application submitted on behalf of Ossory youth under the grant scheme for special projects to assist disadvantaged youth in respect of youth work provision in Newpark Close and Hebron Park will be considered in the context of allocations for 1999 having regard to policy considerations, existing commitments, and to the overall level of financial resources available for the youth sector. In this regard I draw the Deputies' attention to the fact that an additional £1.5 million has been made available for youth services in 1999.
