Vol. 500 No. 1

Written Answers - Nursing Home Subventions.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

224 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Health and Children the cost of eliminating the provisions which allowed the health boards to take the means of children into account when assessing eligibility for a nursing home subvention; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3551/99]

The cost of eliminating the provision which allowed health boards to assess the capacity of adult sons and/or daughters over 21 years of age to contribute towards the cost of nursing home care of their parent is estimated at about £2 million per annum. Appropriate provision has been included in the letters of determination issued to health boards for 1999. The additional funding provided this year brings the total annual amount of funding available for the scheme to £33 million.
