Vol. 500 No. 1

Written Answers - School Accommodation.

Pat Rabbitte

Ceist:

395 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the fact that St. Killian's senior national school, Kingswood, Dublin 24 has applied for basic facilities for 12 years; the reason this large school in an expanding area does not have essential accommodation including a general purposes area for physical education classes, remedial, medical and library rooms, wheelchair toilet facilities, an adequate principal's office, a parents' room and an equipment storage room; the plans, if any, he has to provide these facilities; the timescale in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3198/99]

I am aware that the management of St. Killian's senior national school, Kingswood, has recently renewed its application for grant assistance for the provision of a general purpose room, and ancillary accommodation.

The school was built in the late 1980s and was provided with the standard facilities at that time. However, due to the severe financial difficulties during that period, general purpose rooms were excluded and priority had to be given to the provision of essential classroom accommodation.

My Department is currently re-examining the accommodation requirements of St. Killian's school in the light of the recent application. When this work has been completed, my Department will be in further contact with the school management. At this stage, I am not in a position to give a commitment in respect of a major project at the school.
