Vol. 500 No. 1

Written Answers - National Archive.

Derek McDowell

Ceist:

189 Mr. McDowell asked the Minister for Finance if he has satisfied himself that the building housing the National Archive complies with building and fire safety regulations; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3178/99]

It is presumed that the regulations referred to by the Deputy are the national building regulations that came into force on the 1 June 1992. As this building was built prior to that date these regulations only apply where material alterations, extensions or material change of purpose group are carried out. In this regard, any works carried out to the building subsequent to that date have been carried out in accordance with the regulations.

Notwithstanding the above, it should be noted that this building is fitted with modern fire detection and alarm system, emergency lighting, lit evacuation signage and an automatic sprinkler system. The building is constructed to provide fire resisting, protected escape routes and is further sub-divided to provide fire resisting compartmentation. These features ensure that the building is fully code compliant with the current standards. In particular, the automatic sprinkler installation provides a higher level of fire safety than would be required for any similar building designed to current codes of practice.
