Vol. 500 No. 7

Written Answers. - Environmental Protection.

Ruairí Quinn

Ceist:

213 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he has received representations from a company (details supplied) in County Cork which can no longer meet with the new standards of environmental protection and public health which have been established in relation to its activity and is in need of significant public financial assistance if it is to continue to maintain a service to the city and county of Cork; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4761/99]

No new standards of environmental protection and public health have been established by my Department affecting the firm referred to by the Deputy. Under legislation introduced with effect from February 1997, those parts of cattle and sheep offal known as specified risk material SRM, must be handled and disposed of under certain conditions.

I received representation on behalf of the firm. The position is that there are no funds available to my Department to grant aid this firm or other firms involved in respect of the implementation of the SRM policy.
