Burke asked the Minister for Education and Science if his Department is grant aiding the provision of buildings, roofing materials, pre-fabricated buildings and other building materials for schools and education and sporting facilities containing asbestos or asbestos related materials; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The use of asbestos fibre in building materials has been banned for some years on health and safety grounds. Consequently, my Department does not grant aid its use in the construction of schools and other educational institutions.

Burke asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will sanction funding to County Galway VEC to provide essential laboratory needs to Loughrea vocational national school, County Galway, which has 500 pupils and one laboratory; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5411/99]
An application has been received from County Galway Vocational Education Committee for the provision of a science laboratory at Loughrea vocational school.
My Department has sought information from the VEC regarding estimated cost of the project.
When this information is received, the application will be given full consideration.
